The Poole Local Plan First Alteration sets out policies to guide development
in the town up to 2011. It was adopted on 30th March 2004 and replaces the
previous Local Plan, which was adopted in 1998. It is an important document for
the town as it includes policies that will help shape the location and amount of
new housing in the Borough as well as ensuring the delivery of a proportion of
affordable dwellings and a suitable supply of employment land. It promotes
housing and employment uses in accessible locations and ensures the protection
of important resources such as public open spaces as well as important natural
habitats including the Harbour and heathland areas. The Plan is also important
in providing a policy basis for the regeneration of the central area of Poole as
well as much needed second harbour crossing for the town.
This adopted plan replaces the previous borough-wide local plan which was
adopted in 1998. The review concentrated on the following areas:
- Poole Bridge Regeneration Initiative - The Plan sets the policy
context for delivering new housing, employment and leisure uses in the
central area as well as delivery of a second harbour crossing for the Town.
- Transportation - Promoting development that helps to widen choice
in travel options and promotes integrated transport solutions.
- Employment - Ensuring appropriate sites and opportunities are
available for employment uses.
- Housing - Meeting the housing needs of the town including the
availability of affordable dwellings in new housing developments.
Policies in the Local Plan are 'Saved' until September 2007 under the
provisions of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004.
